The Bartlett Review
An annual that showcases
world-class thinking
The Bartlett is UCL’s faculty of the built environment, a school focused on building a better future. Each year The Bartlett Review showcases their world-class thinking and the impact of that thinking on the world.
By creating a distinctive design system, a strong editorial structure and by telling stories through multiple voices, The Bartlett Review is a publication that has gone from strength to strength. Now in it’s 4th year, The Review sets the standard for the publications coming out of The Bartlett and of UCL.

Editorial structure
The project was split into the research phase and the creation phase. During the research faculty members were interviewed to understand the purpose and need for The Review. In short, did the faculty actually need a publication and if so, what did this look like?
The Review is split into short stories, long stories, anatomy and essays. This gave us flexibility on how to represent the varying needs of each school.
Design
Expressive typography was a solution to lack of imagery. Over the three years this gave a real sense of identity to The Review and each year it became more and more playful, really pushing the original brief which we were set.
The covers used an element from one of the stories inside and created an abstract pattern.
Production
The Review was printed on various papers. Uncoated Acroprint Milk for the big stories, gloss for the photographic section and Popset for the essay section. This change of paper gave a tactile quality and split the sections throughout.
In 2018, bespoke envelopes were created using the unusual textures from the new architecture school, 22 Gordon Street.
