Bartlett 100
A celebration of the built environment

The Bartlett is UCL’s faculty of the built environment. To celebrate 100 years since The Bartlett got its name, they wanted a campaign to engage alumni, staff and external partners and celebrate their real-world global impact.

Bartlett 100 was a year-long campaign running in 2019. At the heart of it was bartlett100.com, a microsite where we published 100 stories in a 100 days.

Strategy

The brief was very short: How do we celebrate 100 years of The Bartlett?

To determine what a successful campaign should look like and what shape the campaign should take, we did research and presented a strategy document that outlined a recommendation.

The strategy was presented as a digital-first campaign in order to reach UCL’s global audience and alumni. A story-driven campaign led us to an ambitious solution: 100 stories, 100 days with a focus on looking forward to the next 100 years.

At the core of the project was the website exploring stories from The Bartlett’s past, present and future – and how that has shaped and continues to shape the world around it.

The brand

The brand identity evolved from using the elements from 100 and restructuring them to create a B for the Bartlett. To make sure the identity was rooted in the Bartlett brand we used the existing palette but removed the black to create a more vibrant and contemporary feel.

The typeface

A core part of Bartlett 100 was a bespoke typeface designed by Colophon. The brief was to create a distinctive display typeface that felt celebratory but challenging; progressive without being too futuristic; and both accessible for a digital-first campaign and flexible. Above all, we said, it shouldn’t feel safe.

The website

Over the 100 days, a story was published each day. These stories took form in essays, photo stories, project profiles and archive material - each one exploring the past, present and future of The Bartlett.
